Tooth Colored Fillings

The concept of a “filling” is replacing and restoring your tooth structure that is damaged due to decay or fracture with a dental material. We will replace old, broken-down amalgam/metal fillings that contain traces of mercury with white fillings (composites) to restore your smile and teeth to a more natural look and feel.

With today’s advancements, no longer will you have to suffer the embarrassment of unsightly and unhealthy silver/mercury fillings or metal margins of the past. Eliminate the dark, black appearance in your teeth with new-age, state-of-the-art, tooth-colored resin or porcelain materials.

Comparison Of White Fillings Versus Silver Amalgam Fillings
White fillings bond to the tooth; they strengthen the tooth by restoring most of its original shape. Silver amalgams, on the other hand, weaken the teeth and make them more susceptible to breaking. Broken teeth can be very expensive to replace; white composite fillings can actually save time and money in the long run.

Most patients prefer white filling composites. This is due to the natural color, strength and overall appearance and feel. Composites are naturally more comfortable.

Hot and cold sensitivity is greatly reduced with composite material compared to the silver/mercury amalgams.

Restorations with composites require less removal of tooth, less structure to replace than those with amalgams and especially with teeth with new cavities. Dramatically smaller holes are needed with a composite.

White fillings are healthier because no traces of mercury are used, unlike silver amalgams.

Non-Surgical Periodontal (Gum Disease) Treatment
Non-surgical gum treatment refers to a conservative approach to the removal of inflamed and infected pockets in the gums around the teeth. The non-surgical approach is to maintain the pocket free of plaque and calculus and not lose the gum tissue by regular (3 mo. interval) scaling and root planing by the hygienist. Home care instruction and oral hygiene aids are provided for the patients use to be more effective at plaque control. The goal of non-surgical periodontal treatment is to bring the gums back to good health by shrinking or eliminating the pockets around the teeth that are the site of infection, without having to have gum surgery.

Metal Free Crowns & Bridges

There's a big difference between metal fillings and metal free restorations. Now replace old crowns and bridges with metal free crown restorations making aesthetics no longer a concern. The "black line" which was visible as a result of metal crowns is now replaced by a crown with virtually invisible margins. Older, unattractive crowns can be replaced with this technique also. Your new metal-free crowns, inlays and bridges won't show wear or cause opposing teeth to erode, and fitting the crown or bridge is a simple procedure.

Crowns or bridges are placed when your dentist feels that your tooth or teeth are damaged beyond the help of fillings.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are used in circumstances where just one tooth needs to be replaced. A dental crown is tooth-shaped cap that is permanently cemented over a tooth, in order to restore the tooth’s strength, shape and size, and improve its appearance. The crown will cover the visible portion of the tooth above and right at the gum line, once it is cemented into place.

Crowns are used to hold weak, broken or cracked teeth together to avoid further fracturing. Crowns are also used to support large fillings, attach a bridge, or cover discolored or deformed teeth.  Crowns may also be placed over dental implants.

Dr. Lisa Ribaudo-Powell usually requires two dental visits to install a crown.  First, the dentist needs to prepare the tooth or implant for the crown.  The dentist will grind and shape the tooth so that the crown can be fitted over it. Then, the dentist makes an impression of tooth and surrounding gums, which is then sent to a dental laboratory so that the crown can be created.  The dentist fits a temporary crown over the tooth, until the permanent crown is ready. During the second visit, dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the finished permanent crown onto the tooth.

Crowns generally last about five to eight years, and with good oral hygiene most crowns last longer.  Certain habits such as fingernail biting, chewing ice, and grinding teeth can do damage to the crown, and should be avoided.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a false tooth (called a “pontic”) used to replace one or more missing teeth. The pontic is centered between two attached porcelain crowns, to create a fixed bridge.  The fixed bridge is permanently cemented to the two teeth on either side of the tooth gap.

Bridges are used when more than one tooth is missing or needs extensive work. Much like a crown, bridges require the surrounding teeth to be prepared by removal of decay and shaping.

Prosthodontics

Prosthodontists are dental specialists in the restoration and replacement of teeth. After completing four years of dental school, prosthodontists receive three additional years of specialized training in an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited graduate education program. This advanced training provides a special understanding of the dynamics of a smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth and the creation of tooth replacements.

Prosthodontists are highly trained in state-of-the-art technologies and procedures for treating many diverse and complex dental conditions and esthetics. These include crowns, veneers, complete and partial dentures, dental implants, continuing care and cosmetic related procedures.

Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry describes the methods used by dentists to manage patient pain and anxiety while at the same time allowing the patient to respond to physical stimulation and verbal command.

Dr. Lisa Powell offers the following types of sedation:
1) Inhalation sedation - such as laughing gas, happy gas, and nitrous oxide.
2) Oral sedation - pills or liquid taken through the mouth.

Sedation dentistry requires that the patient arrive with a companion to drive the patient home after the procedure. Before any dental procedures commence, the patient will become drowsy and relaxed from the sedation, and the patient will be attached to a monitor so that the dentist can watch the patient’s vital signs. At the completion of the dental procedures, the patient will be allowed to recover from the effects of the sedation before being allowed to go home with the companion.

Sedation dentistry is ideal for people who have:

  • A high level of fear or anxiety
  • Suffered past traumatic dental experiences
  • Difficulty in getting numb
  • An overactive gag reflex
  • Very sensitive teeth
  • Complex dental problems
  • Time only to squeeze several procedures into a limited time period
  • A fear of needles and shots
  • A strong dislike of the noises, smells and taste associated with dental care
  • TMJ related difficulties where it is uncomfortable to open their mouth for extended periods

Dr. Powell can discuss the type of sedation that is right for you.

Nitrous Oxide

If you are often overly anxious when going through a dental procedure, Dr. Powell offers nitrous oxide, a sweet-smelling colorless gas made up of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrous oxide is given through a mask that fits snugly over your nose about five minutes before the dental procedure.

Also known as “laughing gas” it is a safe and well established method to deal with dental anxiety and discomfort. It calms and has a comforting effect even though you remain awake, in control, and with the ability to communicate. It also tends to lessen anxiety, increase a patient’s pain threshold, reduce an overactive gag reflex and makes time pass more quickly. It is often used in pediatric dentistry.

Composite Bonding
The term bonding is used to describe procedures where tooth-colored dental resins and composites are used. Direct bonding techniques can be used to change the shape and color of teeth as well as to close unattractive spaces. It can also be used to repair chipped or broken teeth or even to cover up stains. Unlike crowns or caps, direct bonding requires only a minimal amount of tooth reduction thus making it a very conservative procedure.
Composite bonding has many advantages:
  • It is a quick process, which typically takes less than one hour.
  • It does not reduce the tooth’s original structure and is relatively inexpensive.
  • Composite resins come in many different shades and provide better matching of shades to the natural color of your teeth.
  • Composite bonds, however, are not as durable and long-lasting as veneers and crowns and may need to be re-touched or replaced in the future

Dental Veneers
Veneers, usually fabricated from porcelain, are a thin, semi-translucent "shell", custom made to fit precisely over an existing tooth. They are permanently bonded, held in place by a special resin that adheres the back of the veneer to the front of the tooth. The finished result is extremely strong and durable.

Dental Veneers are best suited for:
  • Closing spaces between teeth
  • Restoring broken or chipped teeth
  • Covering unsightly, stained or discolored teeth
  • Correcting uneven or crooked teeth

Veneers can last for years, depending on how well you take care of them. Because veneers are stronger than simple bonding, they are also more resistant to stains and chipping.

We offer two types of veneers:

  • Da Vinci Veneers
Da Vinci Veneers™ are manufactured by DaVinci dental laboratories in West Hills, California. They are best known for their sponsorship of the Extreme Makeover series. Da Vinci Veneers™ are very resistant to staining from cigarette smoking, coffee or tea. The bonding procedure requires little or no anesthesia, and is an ideal choice for improving your smile.

  • Lumineers
Lumineers are a type of porcelain veneer used in cosmetic dentistry to correct stained, chipped, discolored or misaligned teeth. Lumineers are unique in that less of the natural tooth needs to be removed, since Lumineers are much thinner than traditional veneers. With less tooth removal, the need for dental anesthetic is minimized. Lumineers are made out of Cerinate porcelain, which is extremely durable. This allows the veneers to be fabricated as thin as .2 to .3 millimeters.
